Two Hundred and Twenty-Two Days
Boston Dynamics committed $100 million and 25,000 humanoids while it had no permanent chief executive. After 222 days it chose the scientist who built Alexa.

On February 27, 2026, Robert Playter worked his last day as chief executive of Boston Dynamics. He had joined the company in 1994 and run it since 2019, through its sale to Hyundai Motor Group at a $1.1 billion valuation. Amanda McMaster, the chief financial officer, took over on an interim basis until the board found the next leader.
The board took 222 days.
In that interval the company did not stand still. It committed $100 million to a new building. It opened a training center inside a car plant. And its 80 percent owner published a plan to put 25,000 of its humanoid robots to work. All of it happened with a finance chief in the top seat and the word interim in front of her title.
On October 6, Boston Dynamics announced that Rohit Prasad, the scientist who had built Amazon's Alexa, would become chief executive the following day.
Commitments Made Without A Ceo
The first commitment came on June 24. Boston Dynamics said it would transform a 323,000 square foot building at 1601 Trapelo Road in Waltham into a robotics and AI center, consolidating three nearby sites, investing $100 million and creating 1,250 jobs by 2033. Massachusetts put in a $25 million incentive award. McMaster, as interim chief executive, gave the reason: "this expansion is a reflection of how fast our industry is moving. The investment gives our team the space and resources we need to launch our third robot platform this decade."
The second came on September 21, at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia. The company opened a Robotics Metaplant Application Center to train its Atlas humanoid on real work: sequencing automotive parts for assembly, with component assembly itself targeted for 2030. Hyundai said it would deploy 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai Motor and Kia plants over the next few years and build a U.S. facility able to produce 30,000 robots a year. The center is to grow to roughly ten times its size in 2027.
Those are factory numbers, not laboratory numbers. The product they describe is, in the company's own October 6 boilerplate, "our electric humanoid platform currently in development".
A platform still in development, with a 25,000-unit order book from its parent, and no permanent chief executive. That was the vacancy.
The Man From Alexa
Prasad's record is in productizing research. He earned a master's in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1999, having come to Chicago from India to study speech compression and coding; the university describes him as a native of Ranchi, in Jharkhand. He then spent nearly fourteen years at Raytheon BBN Technologies, rising to deputy manager and senior director of its speech, language and multimedia business unit, directing government-sponsored work in speech-to-speech translation.
Amazon recruited him in 2013 as director of machine learning. In 2016 he became vice president and head scientist for Alexa. Delivering a lecture at his alma mater in November 2018, he put the job in one line: "The way I think about Alexa is the way AI is revolutionizing daily convenience. That’s the mission we are on."
By the time he left, after twelve years, he was senior vice president and head scientist for Alexa and artificial general intelligence, credited by Boston Dynamics with building Alexa into a service used in hundreds of millions of households and with leading the Amazon Nova foundation model family. He is a named author on more than 100 scientific articles and holds several patents. He has lived in the Boston area for more than 25 years.
A voice assistant is software that fails quietly. A humanoid in a car plant is hardware that fails in public.
The Owner'S Timetable
Jaehoon Chang, vice chair of Hyundai Motor Group and chair of the Boston Dynamics board, set out the terms of the hire. "Boston Dynamics’ industry-leading robotics, Rohit’s proven ability to turn AI into products at global scale, and Hyundai Motor Group’s modern manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities give us a powerful foundation to build and scale Physical AI", he said.
The structure around Prasad is the structure Hyundai built. The group completed its purchase of a controlling stake on June 21, 2021, leaving SoftBank with 20 percent. Spot, the quadruped, went on sale in June 2020. Stretch, the box-moving robot, followed. Atlas, electric and humanoid, is the third platform the Waltham investment was sized to launch.
There is one more piece of paperwork outstanding. The release says Prasad is also expected to join the board, subject to the relevant approval process. On his first day he was chief executive of a company whose board he had not yet joined.
The Thesis He Signed
Prasad's own statement reads as a thesis rather than a greeting. He said: "Boston Dynamics is uniquely positioned to advance Physical AI through its world-class robotics expertise. I am honored to join the company at such a pivotal moment for the industry. By bringing together advanced AI and robotics, we can build intelligent systems that create meaningful value in real-world environments, expand the reach of robotics across industries, and shape the next era of Physical AI".
The phrase to hold him to is real-world environments. The training center in Georgia is one. The 25,000 plants-and-lines deployment is the measure of whether the thesis survives contact with a production schedule.
Two hundred and twenty-two days passed between the last day of one chief executive and the first day of the next. The count that matters now is 25,000, and the clock on it was started before he arrived.
