Four Jobs in Three Years
Ravi Thanawala ran finance for an $18 billion Nike division, then held four jobs in three years at Papa John's. American Eagle just handed him the books.

The filing carries the dry title of Form 8-K, Item 5.02, dated July 1, 2026: the board of American Eagle Outfitters had, the day before, appointed Ravi Thanawala executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective August 3. Behind the boilerplate sits an unusual succession - the man handing over the books, Mike Mathias, has 25 years of AEO history and is not leaving, moving instead to strategic advisor to chief executive Jay Schottenstein through July 2027.
An outsider following a quarter-century insider, with the insider still in the building: that is the assignment.
The Seat Closest To The Money
Thanawala's career is a study in choosing the finance seat nearest the P&L. Eight years at ANN INC. in finance and operations, including running Asia operations from Hong Kong. Then Nike: global vice president of retail excellence, chief financial officer of Converse, and from June 2020 chief financial officer of Nike North America - the company's largest division, roughly $18 billion in fiscal 2022 revenue.
The Interim-Ceo Test
At Papa John's, where he arrived as chief financial officer in July 2023, the test came early. Eight months into his first public-company CFO seat, the board handed him the entire company as interim chief executive, from March to August 2024. He ran it through the leadership transition, returned to the finance chair, and the roles kept stacking: CFO and EVP of International by September 2024, CFO and president of North America by November 2025. Four jobs in three years.
The complication in the record is what that sequence reveals: the company he joined lost its chief executive within his first year, and he was the stopgap. He leaves Papa John's holding a president title - and takes a job at AEO where the title is, on paper, narrower. The scale is not: a multi-brand retailer whose portfolio spans American Eagle, Aerie, OFFL/NE by Aerie, Todd Snyder and Unsubscribed, with stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and merchandise in more than 30 countries.
The Handover
His own framing of the first task is deliberately unglamorous: "My immediate priority is working with Mike to ensure a seamless transition that maintains organizational momentum." The admiration runs through the numbers, not the brands alone - "I have long admired AEO's powerful portfolio of beloved lifestyle brands," he said in the announcement, crediting the financial foundation Schottenstein, Mathias and the team built.
What he is walking into is a fiscal year with the predecessor at the next desk and shareholders listening for the phrase he chose himself: financial discipline, and new avenues for profitable growth. The 8-K records no arrangements or understandings behind his selection. The record that matters starts with his first quarter.
